1 overall selection by the Indiana Fever in this week's WNBA draft, Clark's salary her first season will be just over $76,000. Clark's pay will escalate over the course of her four-year rookie contract, leaving her with total earnings of $338,056. The WNBA has grown in popularity in recent years, but it still trails behind the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL. The highest paid WNBA player is Las Vegas Aces star Jackie Young, who will earn just over $250,000 this season. Here's how Clark's rookie deal stacks up against the most recent top picks from America's big four sports leagues.

"Child care is core to enabling women to work," she said. She explained that if she stayed in her career, her entire post-tax pay would have gone to child care, and all of the child care providers in her area were waitlisted. I didn't really go through this, so how many people are really thinking child care is an issue? "If you want a strong economy, women have to participate and in order for that to happen, we need strong child care," she said. Raimondo noted that half of Americans live in a "child care desert," with not enough services available at a cost that is affordable.

But right now we're seeing that even if you're the best, women are not paid their fair share." However, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, speaking at CNBC's inaugural Changemakers Summit on Thursday in New York City, said there's a "false narrative" around Clark's expected salary, likening it to the way that executive salaries are displayed for public companies. On Thursday, Seed Health launched CODA, a computational biology platform funded by its consumer business profitability. Seed Health has been in the business of microbiome scientific breakthroughs since its founding in 2015, but its biggest success to-date may have been becoming profitable as a bioscience startup. Katz's co-founder and co-CEO at Seed Health, Raja Dhir, said CODA and the accompanying data set will help to standardize microbiome science methods, which has long been an issue in the field. CODA's first applications are in metabolic health, brain health, longevity, and menopause, research areas chosen because they have already been identified as areas of human health where early CODA data displayed the strongest evidence. Seed Health has been working on several efforts around pioneering microbiome science for human and planetary health, and many in the field believe the approach is destined to have wider applications.

Women in leadership are reaching a level of success that is not only exceptional but highlights novel approaches to old business problems and identification of new market opportunities. The women named to the inaugural CNBC Changemakers list are creating a pattern of what it takes to defy the odds, innovate and thrive in a volatile business landscape. Make no mistake: There is still a distinct need for more coverage of innovative women leaders, and more support from the capital markets. Women leaders are still rare — they're less than 10% of S&P 500 CEOs, while women founders draw about 2% of venture capital dollars. By focusing on women who left an indelible mark on the economy and business world in 2023, CNBC Changemakers recognizes the accomplishments of names in the news and many who have flown under the radar.

If you want to understand how different the human and animal medicine and vaccine industries have historically been, you don't need to look much further than weight loss drugs. When Pfizer spun off its animal health business in 2013 creating Zoetis, about 65% of the company's business was livestock-related. That has flipped now, with 64% of the company's revenue coming from products for companion animals like cats and dogs. Peck credits the Pfizer spinoff for allowing Zoetis to better balance what the company wanted to do in animal health versus the human health side. A similar product was approved for cats, marking the first time that monoclonal antibody treatments, which have become increasingly popular for treating human illnesses, have been used to treat pet osteoarthritis pain.

Members of the CNBC Changemakers Advisory Board gave us many ideas, telling us that transformative leaders, especially women, are those who commit to meaningful change. Here's how we did it:From October 3–November 17, 2023, CNBC conducted an open call for nominations for the Changemakers List. Next year, we'll choose a whole new list of 50 women, and it is entirely possible that many of those women were nominated this year. Qualitative scores were added to the quantitative score from round one, with each weighted equally (50% qualitative, 50% quantitative), and nominees were re-ranked according to their total scores. Ultimately, a data-driven, systematic process led to the creation of the Changemakers list, the first of many more to come.
